Temperature Recommendations by Veterinarian
Outdoor dogs that are normally outdoors(not indoors at all) have developed thicker coats for protection against the colder temps. All dogs need shelter against the wind, as wind can promote heat loss from the body. Recommend insulated dog houses with separate sleeping compartment or cover over the door. Bring ALL dogs in once the temp is below 0 degrees. Hypothermia happens quickly! Also recommended is a heated water source as it is hard to drink ice!! Fluid requirements are high in the wintertime because of less humidity.
If dogs are not normally outdoors, they have not grown a more dense coat and may not be able to handle extreme temps. In general, house dogs should not be left outdoors in less than 32 degrees temps(especially if windy) for any length of time.
Always common sense prevails! Keep in mind- breed, age, health, and coat of dog. Owners must provide food, water, and shelter!
